Fitness Hacks For a New Mom

I feel like I am constantly grasping at time since becoming a Mom. For one, taking an hour to workout in between breastfeeding, naps and diaper changes already feels impossible. And secondly, when I do get some time to myself, I feel a little bit of guilt and start missing my baby (crazy, I know). However, fitness and my health will always be of the utmost importance for me and therefore I wanted to figure out a way to hack my daily activities to burn a few extra calories just in case I can’t hit that one big workout every day.

My first hack, Blood Flow Restriction Bands (BFR Bands): Every morning I take a walk around the block with the baby and I have started to put some BFR bands around my legs. Using BFR bands, even at a slow walking pace can help build muscle and strength. BFR Bands are inexpensive and such an easy hack anyone can do.

Second hack, a good baby carrier: Who needs a weighted vest? If I am walking around the house, running into the store, or going on a hike I will opt to strap the baby onto my chest versus pushing around the stroller.  Sometimes I will even put the carrier on while using my BFR Bands if I feel like being an overachiever that day.

Third hack: Making use of a few minutes through the day and taking Pomodoro breaks. Every so often I will take 5 minutes to do a little AMRAP. Whether it be pushups, squats, lunges, etc…I create a little workout for myself when I have the opportunity to put the baby down or even put the baby in the carrier as an added bonus.

The best part of these hacks is that even though I cannot wake up and get my workout done first thing in the morning anymore, I have the opportunity to burn extra calories throughout the day. . Working out does not have to be 1 or 2 hours in the gym every day but instead can be broken up into little bite size bits throughout the day and it actually impacts your mood and energy in the best way!
